The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has just announced the 2012 induction class which includes Joan Jett, the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Donna Summers. We’re particularly happy at Raw Talent for Joan Jett, who we proudly feature on our guitar learning tool, Raw Talent Guitar. Joan is an influential and inspiring musician, and if you’re not familiar with her history from the Runaways through today, check it out.
What I like about Joan’s story is the musician in her could not be slayed by the business side of the industry. After having her first album rejected by 23 record labels, she and producer Kenny Laguna formed their own label, Blackheart Records. They pressed the record and just winged it from there, selling the album wherever they could, including out of Laguna’s car trunk. The record eventually sold millions and the Blackheart label is still releasing artists in various genres.
Joan Jett’s lesson to us is business and your passion can work well together. She was a musician first, but if she had to become a label owner to get where she wanted, so be it. She took the financial risk to start a label and look where it took her – platinum albums, movie roles, television appearances, live concerts worldwide, executive producer, etc. She is a worthy inductee to the Rock & Roll Hall indeed.
Now, if Joan can do all of that, you can certainly pick up and learn the guitar. After all, who knows where it will take you.
