Lesson 6.5 – From the 5th String

Skipping the 6th (low E) string while strumming can be difficult in the beginning. The best way to avoid hitting the 6th string (or any outside string you are trying to avoid) is to practice with your strumming hand. As you are strumming, pull away from the string you are trying to miss, practicing both down and up strokes. Keep practicing until the motion feels natural – this will take some time.

When available, you can use the thumb of your fretting hand to block, or mute, the 6th string. When doing this, even if you hit the 6th string it won’t make a sound – just a quick “thump”. Try it out!
