Lesson 8.10 – Palm Muting

Palm muting is a strumming technique most commonly associated with power chords in rock and heavy metal, and is usually performed with a distortion effect. The sound you are trying to achieve with palm muting is a chunky, dampened sound. To palm mute, place the side, or heel, of your picking hand directly on the strings near the bridge. Applying the right amount of pressure with the heel of your hand is the key. If you apply too much pressure, the strings won’t ring out; apply an uneven amount of pressure, and some strings will ring while others won’t.
